Rama Navami is observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Rama. This year Rama Navami festival falls on Thursday, April 2, 2020, four days before the Mahavir Jayanti. It is celebrated on the ninth day of Chaitra month, the first month in the Hindu lunar calendar. It marks the culmination of the spring festival of Vasanta Navratri or Chaitra Navratri which begins on Ugadi. On this day many people conduct homa and conclude the nine days festivities of Chaitra Navratri, due which the festival is known as Ram Navami or Rama Navratri.
While the dates vary each year, the festival is largely celebrated on the ninth day of the Shukla Paksha, as per the Hindu calendar’s Chaitra month. As such, it coincides with the Gregorian months of March-April every year.

On this day, devotees recite verses from holy scriptures like Ramayana, Shrimad Bhagavatam. They visit temples with families and friends were the idols of Lord Ram are bathed and clothed to mark the incarnation on Earth. The ceremony is followed by reciting Ram Katha and singing bhajans. Some devotees observe fast this day.

History

Ram Navami was one of the five major holy festivals celebrated by all lower and higher castes Hindu religions. The holy festival of Rama Navami2020 is to be celebrated in Shukla Paksha’ or the waxing moon phase on the 9th day of Chaitra month.
The history of Sri Rama Navami is Lord Rama’s birthday was marked on this day and the king of Ayodhya, Dasharatha and his wife Kausalya are the parents to Lord Rama. Dashratha had three wives named Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi. He had no children to take up his emperor in the future and he was very sorry for the people of Ayodhya. One day he was suggested by the great Rishi named Vasistha to do the Puthra Kamesti Yagna to achieve his dream for a child. After completion of Yagna, he gave a kheer to his three wives to get conceived.

Ram Navami 2020: Rituals

On this very significant day and devotees keep a day-long fast, starts in the morning and extends till the next morning. They worshipping Lord Rama listen or narrating the epic Ramayana or Nama Ramayanam, performing the ceremonial wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita and some conduct the Rama Navami procession.
Devotees in some parts of the country also organize bhajans and kirtans for an entire nine-day Navratra period. On this day some of the devotees observe a strict fast and refrain themselves from the consumption of food and water, whereas some devotees observe a milder form of fasting can consume water and fruits.
